What types of magnetic compasses are there and which ships are they suitable for?
Jan 15, 2025| Magnetic compasses are designed with different models, specifications and shapes according to the needs of different ships. Different models of magnetic compasses are suitable for different types of ships. Here we briefly introduce the models of magnetic compasses and which ships they are suitable for.
Magnetic compass models
Small magnetic compasses generally adopt a circular appearance design. The inner dial is not too large, generally around 65mm, and the external protective cover generally has some effects of a magnifying glass, allowing the sailor to see a larger and clearer dial. This small magnetic compass can generally be embedded, fixed on the base, wall-mounted, etc. Its structure is relatively simple, it uses excellent liquid, it is easy to use and maintain, has high accuracy, and is flexible.
Desktop magnetic compass is a magnetic compass model that meets national standards. It also uses liquid as a medium. Compared with small magnetic compasses, this desktop magnetic compass has more powerful functions, more convenient correction, high stability, and can be placed with a corrector.
The general vertical magnetic compass is a larger magnetic compass model than the desktop magnetic compass. It uses a compass basin with Class A transparent liquid, and is installed in combination with a compass and a compass cabinet. Both it and the desktop magnetic compass can be equipped with a deviation corrector, which makes the compass correction more accurate and convenient. According to different ships and different requirements, the vertical magnetic compass has subdivided models such as reflection magnetic compass and projection magnetic compass, which have the characteristics of high precision, clear lighting and high stability.
What ships are the magnetic compasses suitable for?
Generally speaking, small magnetic compasses are suitable for small boats, such as yachts, lifeboats, closed boats and other types of ships. They mainly play the role of indicating heading and identifying direction.
The desktop magnetic compass is suitable for some small steel ships, or some small fishing boats with drive engines, and its function is the same as that of the small magnetic compass.
The vertical magnetic compass is generally suitable for medium and large ships. It is used as a standard compass and a steering compass. It generally has better lighting and is equipped with a sub-compass for better repeated indication. The magnetic compass also has a certain projection capability and is more powerful in function.
