What is a vertical magnetic compass? Let’s briefly talk about the characteristics of a projection magnetic compass。
Jan 17, 2025| The vertical magnetic compass is a navigation device equipped in large and medium-sized ships. It is usually installed on the deck of the ship and is used for navigation direction and heading. Generally speaking, the vertical magnetic compass is a kind of standard magnetic compass, and its function is equally important as the steering magnetic compass. At present, the use of vertical magnetic compass is more common in many large ships.
What is a vertical magnetic compass?
Maybe many people don't know much about the vertical magnetic compass. In fact, most of the white vertical devices we see on the deck of some ships, like pillars or Hericium erinaceus, are vertical magnetic compasses, which are also standard magnetic compasses. This vertical magnetic compass is installed on the deck of the ship. The purpose of doing so is to stay away from the ship's operating room to avoid affecting other equipment. The field of view on the deck is wide. Using light, the relevant information of the magnetic compass dial can be projected into the steering room, cockpit and other operating rooms using a reflection device or a projection device. This is the characteristic and function of the vertical magnetic compass.
Vertical magnetic compasses are generally divided into several types. For example, the reflection magnetic compass is a type of vertical magnetic compass. This type of magnetic compass is similar to the traditional standard magnetic compass and consists of a compass basin, a compass disk, a binnacle, a self-deviation corrector, etc. The vertical magnetic compass we see on the deck is a binnacle wrapped in an outer shell. The characteristic of the reflection magnetic compass is that it is used in combination with a reflection device, and can use light to transmit the current compass disk scale information to the cockpit for crew observation.
Characteristics of projection magnetic compass
In addition to the reflection magnetic compass, there is also a projection magnetic compass, which is also a type of vertical magnetic compass. Its general structure is the same as that of the reflection magnetic compass. The difference is that it uses a projection device to feedback its dial information, and the device details are also slightly different. Using the projection principle of the projection device, the information on the magnetic compass dial is fed back to the steering room. This is the main feature of the projection magnetic compass.
In general, no matter which type of magnetic compass, as a standard magnetic compass, it is necessary to undergo routine calibration checks to see if there is a large deviation. If there is a deviation, then deviation correction is required.
