The Principle And Characteristics Of Magnetic Compass.

The magnetic compass is a pointing instrument made by the principle that the magnetic needle can point to the magnetic north (south) pole of the earth under the action of the earth magnetic force. The magnetic compass has been a long-standing history of installation and use on marine vessels as an important navigation instrument. At present, modern ships have been equipped with advanced nautical instruments such as gyroscopes (Grocery) and Guardian (GPS). However, modern magnetic compasses are still necessary because of their simple structure, reliable performance and independent of external conditions. The navigation instrument is installed and used by marine vessels. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), classification societies, and national ship inspection agencies have clearly stipulated that marine vessels should be equipped with magnetic compasses and should correctly correct self-difference and self-contained tables.


1 magnetic compass classification

a According to the magnetic compass, there is liquid in the basin, there are two types of liquid compass and dry compass. The compass of the liquid compass is suspended in the basin filled with liquid. Due to the damping of the liquid, the stability of the compass is better when the ship is rocking. In addition, due to the buoyancy of the liquid, the friction between the compass support pin and the bearing can be reduced, thereby increasing the sensitivity of the bowl. b According to the purpose of the magnetic compass, there are mainly standard compasses, steering compasses. The standard compass is generally vertical and is mounted on the top deck of the cab (the compass deck). Because of its high position, no obscuration, and small impact from ship magnetism, it is used to observe the heading and determine the object orientation and correct the steering compass, so it is called the standard compass.

2 magnetic compass self-difference and correction

3 magnetic compass installation

a The magnetic compass should be installed on the longitudinal centerline of the ship as much as possible, and the first line of the compass should coincide with (or parallel to) the longitudinal centerline of the ship.

b The standard magnetic compass is 1 meter away from any ferromagnetic material.

4 daily maintenance of magnetic compass

a The usual magnetic compass should be covered with a compass (the standard compass should be covered with a compass).

b Keep the liquid in the basin empty and transparent, eliminating bubbles.

c Keep the shaft of the bowl, the shaft of the constant level is lubricated, and the rotation is flexible.

d Regularly check the half cycle of the compass, sensitivity, and refill the pot when necessary.

e No magnetic objects should be placed near the compass, and the compass should not be exposed to high temperatures and vibration for a long time.
